petrol and hybrid engines — specifically the 1.0L,

WHAT IT DOES MECHANICALLY

Unlike older distributor-based ignition systems, a
coil-on-plug unit sits directly on top of each spark
plug and fires independently. The Bosch 0986221057
takes the car’s standard 12V–14V battery supply and
steps it up to as much as 40,000 volts in a
fraction of a second — generating the high-voltage
spark needed to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the
combustion chamber cleanly and at precisely the
right moment.

WHY IT MATTERS

When an ignition coil begins to fail, the symptoms
show up immediately. Common signs include engine
misfires, rough idling, hesitation under acceleration,
increased fuel consumption, and a check engine light.
On TSI and TFSI engines in particular, a weak coil
can trigger limp mode. Fitting the correct

protects the catalytic converter from damage caused
by unburnt fuel.
