The Febi Bilstein 106571 is an engine coolant temperature sensor, commonly referred to as an ECT sensor, designed for selected Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. Available at Dub Source JA, Kingston’s dedicated VW and Audi parts specialist in Jamaica. WHAT IT DOES This sensor threads into the engine block or cylinder head where it sits in direct contact with the coolant circulating through the engine. It measures coolant temperature continuously and sends a live electrical signal to the ECU, which uses that reading to manage three critical systems at once. The first is fuel injection, where the ECU adjusts how much fuel to deliver based on how hot or cold the engine currently is. The second is ignition timing, where combustion timing is adjusted to suit the engine’s thermal state. The third is the radiator cooling fans, which the ECU switches on and off based on when the coolant temperature reaches the correct threshold. WHY THE COLD START PHASE MATTERS The ECT sensor is most critical during the warm-up phase. When the engine is cold, the ECU relies on this sensor’s reading to inject a richer fuel mixture, which is what allows the engine to idle smoothly and warm up efficiently without stalling. Once the engine reaches normal operating temperature, the ECU uses the same sensor data to lean out the fuel mixture for normal running, which is what keeps fuel consumption in check during everyday driving. A sensor that reads incorrectly in either direction disrupts this entire process, which is why a faulty ECT sensor tends to produce a wide range of symptoms rather than just one. COMMON FAULT SYMPTOMS When the Febi 106571 fails or sends an inaccurate signal, common symptoms include hard cold starts, rough or unstable idling during warm-up, poor fuel economy, the engine running rich with black smoke from the exhaust, overheating caused by cooling fans not activating correctly, and a check engine warning. On turbocharged Volkswagen and Audi engines these symptoms are more pronounced because fuel and timing management is more tightly controlled than on older naturally aspirated units. COMPATIBILITY The Febi Bilstein 106571 fits selected Volkswagen and Audi models. ECT sensor fitment is specific to engine code and coolant circuit configuration.
