WHAT IT IS

This is a plug top ignition coil, also known as a coil-on-plug unit, which sits directly on top of the spark plug. Instead of using old-style ignition leads, each coil fires its own cylinder independently, giving the ECU more accurate control over spark timing and combustion.

As a Gen 2 updated design, the NGK 48042 uses improved internal insulation and a more robust 4-pin connector. That matters on turbocharged TSI and TFSI engines, where ignition coils operate in a hot, high-vibration environment and need to maintain a stable electrical signal under load.

WHAT IT DOES MECHANICALLY

The ignition coil takes the vehicle’s low battery voltage and transforms it into the high-voltage pulse needed to fire the spark plug. That spark ignites the compressed air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber at precisely the right moment.

On turbocharged Volkswagen and Audi engines, the ignition system has to work harder because cylinder pressure is higher than on older naturally aspirated engines. If the coil becomes weak, the spark may break down under boost, especially during acceleration or heavier driving.

WHY IT MATTERS

A failing ignition coil usually shows up as rough idling, engine misfires, hesitation under acceleration, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, or a check engine light. In many cases, the fault may feel worse when the engine is hot or when the car is under load.

Leaving a weak coil in place can also create further issues. Repeated misfires can allow unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust system, which may put extra stress on the catalytic converter over time.
